JUMP AND BASE RUN

Set up two baseball bases about 15 yards apart. Instruct athletes to line up behind one of the bases in athletic position. The first athlete in line will then JUMP as high as possible then after landing, “sprint” as fast as possible to the other base and stop and step on it. Instruct athletes to “hinge” the hips before rapidly thrusting the hips up to jump. After landing, the athlete should begin to sprint. Instruct the athlete to raise the knees and “pump” arms when running to the base. Instruct athlete to sprint with ball of the feet and no heel touching the ground. This is a prelude to coaches beginning to teach more sprint mechanics while running bases.
